What James is building now

James Adams is the founder of Life Box, a Canadian service that helps families organize the documents, accounts, instructions and people that matter if something happens to the person who normally handles everything. Life Box grew out of his own household: he manages most of his family's finances and digital life, and there was no calm, organized place for his wife to go if he wasn't there to explain it.

Life Box is also a working example of how he builds. The product uses artificial intelligence to read uploaded documents, recognize what they are, connect the people and organizations mentioned across them, and show a family what is still missing — work that would otherwise fall to a person filling in forms. That is the pattern in most of his projects: take something fragmented and manual, and rebuild it as a simpler modern product.

Founding, growing and selling a company

Before Life Box, James founded Visual Media Church, a digital media business serving the church media market. He built the product, found the customers, grew the revenue and ran the operations. The business was ultimately acquired by Renewed Vision, the technology company behind ProPresenter.

That experience shapes how he works with other founders. He has been through the parts that don't appear in startup advice — deciding what to build next when the roadmap and the revenue disagree, preparing a founder-led business so it can survive due diligence, handing over something you made, and figuring out what comes after. He advises on acquisition readiness and exit planning from having lived it rather than from theory.

An AI-first builder, not an AI commentator

James works with artificial intelligence as a practical foundation for building companies: creating new software products, automating workflows, testing business concepts quickly, building internal tools, and reducing the friction between an idea and a working product. His interest is applied — using AI to make sophisticated capability affordable for small organizations and independent founders, not treating it as a standalone trend.

His work spans product strategy, SaaS business models, design, automation and go-to-market — usually all at once, because he builds the things himself.

Investing, advising and governance

Alongside operating companies, James invests in and advises businesses, working directly with founders on product strategy, pricing, business model design, scaling and technology decisions.

His leadership experience extends into governance. He has served on boards and as a board chair, including governance experience with an organization employing more than fifty people and leadership within the charitable sector. That gives him perspective from several sides of a business at once: founder, operator, product leader, investor, advisor, board member and board chair.

Find useful problems. Build useful things.

James is drawn to industries and workflows that are unnecessarily complicated, outdated, fragmented or inefficient — the ones where people quietly accept a bad process because that's how it has always been done. His approach combines technology, artificial intelligence, product strategy, design, automation and recurring-revenue business models, with a bias toward shipping something real.

He lives and works in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the Halifax region, and builds for customers across Canada and beyond.
